What is Saree and Fabric Length?

Fabric in India is sold by the meter, the yard and the gaz, and a saree is described by its length in yards or meters: a standard saree is about 6 yards (5.5 meters), and a nine-yard saree is the traditional Maharashtrian nauvari. This converter changes a length between meters, yards, feet, inches, centimeters, gaz, hath and girah, and counts how many standard or nine-yard sarees it makes. The gaz is usually one yard today, but the older gaz was about 33 inches, so choose the one you use in the box above.

About Gaz Length (inches)

The length of one gaz in inches. In cloth shops today a gaz is one yard, or 36 inches. Older records use a gaz of about 33 inches. The hath is half a gaz and the girah is a sixteenth of a gaz, so both change with this number.

  • Hath = gaz ÷ 2, girah = gaz ÷ 16

About Meters (m)

The metric unit in which fabric is sold in most shops.

  • 1 m = 1.09361 yd
  • 1 m = 3.28084 ft
  • 1 m = 1.094 yd

About Yards (yd)

The imperial yard of 36 inches. A standard saree is about 6 yards long, and a nine-yard saree is 9 yards.

  • 1 yd = 0.9144 m
  • 1 yd = 3 ft
  • 6 yd = 5.49 m
  • 9 yd = 8.23 m

About Gaz (gaz)

The traditional Indian cloth measure, one yard today (36 inches) and about 33 inches in older records. The box above sets it.

  • 1 gaz = 2 hath = 16 girah

About Feet (ft)

The imperial foot of 12 inches.

  • 1 ft = 0.333333 yd
  • 1 ft = 0.3048 m
  • 1 yd = 3 ft

About Standard Sarees (6 Yards)

How many standard sarees of 6 yards (5.49 m) this length makes. Real sarees are usually between 5.2 and 6 meters.

  • 1 sarees = 0.666667 sarees
  • 1 sarees = 5.4864 m
  • One saree = 5.49 m

About Nine-yard Sarees

How many nine-yard sarees of 8.23 m this length makes, such as the traditional Maharashtrian nauvari.

  • 1 sarees = 1.5 sarees
  • 1 sarees = 8.2296 m
  • One nine-yard saree = 8.23 m

About Centimeters (cm)

A hundredth of a meter, used for fabric widths and for body measurements.

  • 1 cm = 0.393701 in
  • 1 cm = 10 mm
  • 100 cm = 1 m

  • 1 in = 2.54 cm
  • 1 in = 0.0833333 ft
  • 1 in = 2.54 cm

About Hath (hath)

The forearm length used by tailors, half a gaz, which is 18 inches with the modern gaz.

  • 2 hath = 1 gaz

About Girah (girah)

A tailor’s unit of one sixteenth of a gaz, which is 2.25 inches with the modern gaz.

  • 16 girah = 1 gaz

About Millimeters (mm)

  • 1 mm = 0.1 cm
  • 1 mm = 0.0393701 in
