What is Angle?

An angle measures a turn or the opening between two lines. A full circle is 360 degrees, which is also 2π radians or 400 gradians. Maths uses radians, everyday life and navigation use degrees, and maps use arcminutes.

About Degrees (°)

A degree is 1/360 of a full circle. It is the most familiar unit of angle, used in geometry, navigation and everyday life.

  • 90° = a right angle, 180° = a straight line, 360° = a full turn
  • 1° = 60 arcminutes
  • The 360-degree circle goes back to ancient Babylonian astronomy

About Radians (rad)

The radian is the SI unit of angle: the angle at the center of a circle that cuts off an arc equal in length to its radius. A full circle is 2π radians.

  • 1 rad is about 57.2958°, and π rad = 180°
  • Standard in mathematics, physics and programming
  • Most programming languages use radians for sin, cos and tan

About Gradians (grad)

A gradian (or gon) divides a right angle into 100 equal parts, so a full circle is 400 gradians. It was introduced in France alongside the metric system.

  • 100 grad = 90°, and 1 grad = 0.9°
  • Used mainly in surveying in parts of Europe
  • Shown as GRAD on some scientific calculators

About Arcminutes (′)

An arcminute is 1/60 of a degree. It is used for very small angles in astronomy, navigation and optics.

  • 60′ = 1°, and 1′ = 60 arcseconds
  • One minute of latitude is about one nautical mile
  • The Moon appears about 31 arcminutes wide in the sky
