What is Fuel Economy?

Fuel economy tells you how far a vehicle travels on a given amount of fuel. Different countries state it differently: kilometers per liter, miles per US gallon, or miles per UK gallon, which are not the same because the gallons differ. This converter lets you compare cars across these ratings.

About Km per Liter (km/L)

Kilometers per liter shows how far a vehicle travels on one liter of fuel, so a bigger number means better economy. It is used in Japan, Brazil, India and some other countries.

  • 1 km/L is about 0.6214 mi/L
  • 1 km/L is about 2.352 mpg (US), or 2.825 mpg (UK)
  • Higher is better

About Miles per Liter (mi/L)

Miles per liter shows how many miles a vehicle travels on one liter of fuel. It suits drivers who measure distance in miles but buy fuel by the liter, and a bigger number means better economy.

  • 1 mi/L = 1.609 km/L
  • 1 mi/L is about 3.785 mpg (US), or 4.546 mpg (UK)
  • Higher is better

About MPG (US) (mpg)

Miles per US gallon is the fuel economy unit used in the United States. A bigger number means better economy. One US mpg is about 0.4251 km/L.

  • 1 mpg (US) = 0.4251 km/L, and 1 km/L is about 2.352 mpg (US)
  • New US cars average roughly 25 to 30 mpg
  • A US gallon is 3.785 L, so US mpg figures look smaller than UK ones for the same car

About MPG (UK) (mpg)

Miles per imperial gallon is the fuel economy unit used in the UK, where the imperial gallon (4.546 L) is larger than the US gallon. One UK mpg is about 0.3540 km/L.

  • 1 mpg (UK) = 0.3540 km/L, and 1 km/L is about 2.825 mpg (UK)
  • The same car shows about 20% higher mpg in UK units than in US units
  • UK fuel is sold by the liter, but car economy is still advertised in mpg
